So now that Etienne de Crecy - the original album's compiler - has issued a second volume in the series, you may wonder how it compares to the first. It's a much more high-tech collection: the soul and funk-disco of the original have been replaced by electro and techno, and the French sale slogans used for the first volume's song titles have been updated to reflect more advanced ways of obtaining cheap stuff - they all refer to P2P filesharing systems. So there's no way this album could have had room for a track by Air, as the first one did. In fact, the 80s slant of the sounds on Super Discount 2 has the initial disadvantage of making the album a bit too modish for its own good. Everyone seems to be producing 80s-influenced music at the moment, and you can bet that much of that music will be as dated in 2010 as the original stuff wa! s in 1990. Indeed, there's nothing revolutionary about any of these tracks, and most of them feature sounds that have long been clich??s of dance music: acid squeals, extreme filter resonances and sweeps, breakdowns, and drum or bass dropouts. It's a indication then of the talents at work here that none of this music sounds in the least bit hackneyed. If it's not too pretentious to speak of "classical" electronic music, then this is exactly what the tracks on Super Discount 2 are. They refine to perfection techniques that have been used countless times before, and wring new meaning out of even the most basic material - two repeated chords, or an arpeggio, or those 808 kick and clap sounds you're heard a thousand times before, but never in quite this way. The final track, Overnet, is the ne plus ultra of this method. Although it's nearly nine minutes of a simple three-note riff repeated over and over by many different synths in unison, it's never static, and seems to build ! ceaselessly to crescendo after crescendo. This is not the org! anic mus ic of the first Super Discount, but its mechanistic rhythms have their own type of soul. And though it's undeniably retro sounding, it's also virtually flawless.
